Malta – Less than one day after the demonstration against animal cruelty, on 5th of June, Star, the mixed-breed dog rescued in Malta died. The dog had been shot with a pellet gun in the head 40 times, bound by her paws and muzzle, and buried alive in a grave.. She had an incredible instinct to survive: she had managed to dig her way to the surface, scratching away the sand from her face – allowing herself to free her face in order to breathe. An animal rescue employee found the dog and brought her to an animal clinic for emergency care. Star was operated on, pellets removed and was slowly recuperating.

Star had been under the constant care of St Francis Animal Welfare Center and had been making an excellent recovery, however a few days ago, she began to throw up. Veterinarians made every effort to save her, but her condition deteriorated yesterday afternoon, and she died.

Star’s experience will not however have been in vain: it is a call for stricter animal cruelty laws.

Star had a Facebook page too, with more than 70000 members; who wanted to have the latest news about the dog, now can be informed about the fight against animal cruelty, in the name of Star.

We received a letter a few days ago from Noah Menschen für Tiere e.V., a German animal rights society. We are pleased to help their work with the spread of this letter. They fights for a better life for hens., because nowadays, they are often kept in small cages, and they are used as real egg machines, who haven’t got feelings, or rights for a normal humane life.

NOAH e.V. launched a guerilla promotion event in downtown Frankfurt on April 12th (just before easter). Their aim was to show shoppers that 68% of farm hens are still kept in utterly devastating conditions. While doing this, they educated people to buy eggs from humane husbandry in order to help in resolving today’s disadvantages of chicken farming. They first borrowed real, live chickens from the owner who runs an organic chicken farm. He helped them with a clear conscience, since his feathered friends were going to serve a noble cause.

For a very brief time and under veterinary supervision they put the hens into what looked like an ordinary vending machine, but it was all but ordinary – it was: The Egg Machine! (Just for the record, all hens are happy, healthy and back in their coop with their fellow chickens.)

You can find more information on their website: www.noah.de.

Help together hens, buy eggs from humane husbandry! Anyway, these eggs tastes better;)

Some statistics from the world concerning ownerless dog’s situation:
There are approximately 500 million stray dogs in the world. The number of ownerless dogs in Hungary is up to one million. The dog pounds kill in every year more than 150000 animals. Our association fights for the abolition of dog pounds, and for their conversion into no kill shelters. In India, there are 25 to 30 million dogs, and most of them are ownerless dogs. It is impossible to determine how many stray dogs are in the USA. We estimate their number to 68 million… In Britain, there are 120000 stray dogs. In Taiwan there are 180000 stray dogs.

The causes are various:
A lot of animals are given for the future owner as a gift. But often it reveals that the person didn’t want to have an animal, or he/she has no idea about how to keep an animal in a responsible way. Numbers of times, children pray for a puppy, then he/she doesn’t care about the new family member, and adults let the puppy to try his luck.
There are a lot of people who raise full-blood dogs in hope of earn a lot of money, but these dogs in absence of costumers, finish living in the streets too.
People often think that dogs are house guards, and not living beings, with emotions and needs. When these people realize the reality, they dispose of dogs.
Dogs’ number living in streets can multiple quickly, if we don’t spay or clean them.
If you have a dog and you don’t want to have puppies, spay, or clean it.
Use microchip, tattoos, or any other kind of sign on your dog/cat; it is much more simple to find an ownerless dog’s owner, if we know, who is it.
Dogs became crazy when it’s springtime; they hear the voice of nature, and want to have puppies. Wrong fences less dogs to leave.
Protect animals and nature! Be a responsible pet owner!

How to be a responsible pet owner?
Vaccinate your animals against the diseases (as rabies, parvovirus, etc). If you discover something strange with your animal, take it to the doctor.
Take care of your animals: give them always clean water and healthy, various food.
Exercise your pets every day, because they need care and plays, as you need the entertainment too.
Spay and clean your dog, if you don’t want to have puppies
When you go for a walk with your dog, pay attention for it, especially when you are in a dangerous area (where there are a lot of cars for example). Clean up after your dog.
Train your pets! They need to be trained as children need it.
Never leave young children alone with dogs.
When an animal is scared, it can easily bite you- because it’s the only way to show its feeling.
Chip your pet, because it is the best solution to find your animal in case of loss.
Spend time with your animal.
If you have any tips to complete this list, please write us your ideas!:)

Sustainability means the possibility to endure. People think that Earth’s capacity is endless. But we use Earth’s means faster, as it could rebuild itself. It means that in some centuries, we won’t have clean water to drink, healthy food to eat, and healthy place for living. We have to change our lifestyle if we would like to have a beautiful world to our grandchildren.

Sustainability can be realized in level of individual, family, industry. It is important to emphasize that the least things are also significant.
We can live in a sustainable way as individual, and family if we live an environmental protective lifestyle. That means that we don’t use more water as needed, we collect rubbish selectively, we use the public transport or bicycle instead of cars.
Industry must pay attention for gases emitted; they have to care about their workers. A lot of companies exploit workers: don’t assure a healthy way of living and working, and don’t pay for their work rightfully.
More and more people begin to live an absolute sustainable lifestyle. They produce their own food in the garden, they don’t produce garbage, and they live in eco-houses.

They aren’t friends of the animals at all. Animals fear from them. Their task is to collect dogs from streets, and after the 2 weeks of quarantine, they can kill them. If your dog gets lost, you should have a look round at the pounds situated in your area. In general, people don’t go to flaying houses if they would have a dog, so these animals don’t have much possibility to survive. The pounds are on the margins of the world.

Our association works in Hungary for the abolition of pounds, and their conversion into shelters. We would like to fight for a better world with better chances for ownerless dogs!
If you would like to have a new dog, go to a shelter, or to a pound to adopt one! With this step, you can help dogs in trouble, and it is cheaper than buy one from a raiser. And you have to know: ownerless dogs are grateful for everything!
IMPORTANT: ownerless dogs can be sometimes dangerous and timid. You have to be very cautious in the first times. Be patient!:)

Natural or chemical disasters touch humans and animals together. In case of contaminations, people try to save human victims first, and after animal victims. In numbers of cases we don’t save our animal friends because of the lake of time or because of the gravity of the contamination (when human rescue team’s life is in danger for example). Here you can find some serious contaminations, and natural disasters of the last 50 years.

Chemical disasters

Ukraine- Chernobyl
The nuclear catastrophe past in Ukraine, in Chernobyl is known by everyone. After the explosion of the nuclear power station’s reactors on 26 April 1986, the town was evacuated. We know that people tainted by nuclear radiation became ill, not only the habitants of the town, but in the neighborhood too. But there wasn’t any study about the contamination of animal population living there, until 2010.
In this study, it revealed that animal population is fewer than it was before the catastrophe. Animals born with mutations (as 3 wings, or 5 legs) weren’t rare.
But the reverse of the medal: in the abandoned area animals wasn’t disturbed by human interference, so they could live in a human-free area, in peace, and safety. We can explore that abandoned buildings are being enveloped by trees and grasses; it will become an ecosystem of rare wildlife in the future.
So we can make a conclusion, that the nuclear disaster made serious problems in the wildlife too, and caused the death of thousands of animals (in a concrete way, or by implication), but in the other side, wildlife will be regenerated in some decades, and will live in peace, free of people.

Hungary- The red sludge area
The worst chemical catastrophe of Hungary, past in October 2010, the red sludge flushed mainly two villages: Kolontár, and Devecser.
The sludge made serious loss in the wildlife: animals suffocated in the 2 meters tall sludge, or died because of the consequences of the connection of the vitriolic material and their skin. Animal protective associations went immediately to help animals in trouble, and they saved the life of some, but wild animals, as deers and rabbits for example, couldn’t be rescued. Hundreds of fishes living in the Marcal and Torna died too because the toxic material flew in these rivers.
The contaminated area is henceforward left by wildlife, even half year after the catastrophe.
Clean up and repair works continue in the area. It is unknown yet, that wildlife will replaced in this red sludge touched area or not.

Japan- Earthquake and nuclear catastrophe
In Japan, after the earthquake past on 22 of March 2011, hundreds of pets became ownerless, or blessed, even died. Pets, who survived the earthquake and tsunami, were frightened, and shocked. Numbers helped them to attend the great moment of finding their owner and living again in a safety place. We haven’t got information about the wildlife touched in the catastrophe.
But about the nuclear catastrophe, we have. In the beginning of April, when the nuclear material flew into the sea, animal protective associations feared that it will cause serious problems in the marine life. Now, after the information, the contamination in sea might not so serious…

Natural disasters

Wildfires
A wildfire is an uncontrolled fire occurring in combustible vegetation in the countryside, or in a wilderness area. It differs from other fires by its size, spreading speed, ability to jump gaps, and change direction. It can happen in summer, when it’s dry and hot, there are a lot of combustible materials, or irresponsible people light fires, in a direct or indirect way. Wildfires happen more often because of global warming.
They can cause extensive damages, in property, human, and animals lives. Animals can’t leave their habitat in time, when fires arrive. They suffer from burn injury, burn inhalation, or even die. We have to do everything to prevent them.
It is interesting, and shows the miracle of nature, that some plants use fires to living after. For example cape lilies lie until fires brush away the covering, and then they begin to blossom.
Wildfires occur on every continent, except Antarctica.

Floodings
We can observe more floods nowadays; it can be correlated to global warming. Floods happen in a catastrophic way, killing hundreds of people, and animals.
Animals can’t have the possibility to leave wet places, because sometimes these areas are so extended. Rivers beach hundreds of animal corpses. While rivers flood, animals have difficulties to find food too.
It happens often, then an area touched seriously by flooding, transforms: it becomes a marsh. Other kind of animals seize them, and new kind of plants start to grow.

Once upon a time, there was a cute and hungry raccoon. He lived in Long Island, near to the residential area. He was a real gourmand, he loved sweets. Every day he went to see what sweeties are thrown out. One beautiful day, he found a jar of Skippy peanut butter, and he was very happy due to his treasure. He started to eat the delicious peanut butter. He plugged his head deeper and deeper into the jar. And when he finished eating the entire sweetie, he realized that his head is jammed into the jar…

What to do…? How to live together with a jar? Children will call him Skippy, if the situation doesn’t change… And his family? What will he say to his kids? Papa wouldn’t give them any peanut butter? Oh, real tragedy happens….
He would like to hide from his kids, and from human children mocking on him, so he marooned in the top of a pole. And he was waiting…
Some hours later, he saw some human getting closer to him. Some minutes later they liberated him by the captivity of his sweet treasure. He was very happy to go home, he lived happy ever after.
